Cities for releasing creative juices

As an actor, I’m incredibly lucky as not only get to do what I love, but on occasion I also get to travel the world and work in some pretty special places. There’s no doubt that an inspirational environment can really help to get the creative juices flowing and my work has taken me across Europe and beyond staying in some stunning cities, some of which I’d like to share with you.

Cape Town

Cape Town is such an amazing city. It’s a vibrant place with incredible people and a culture so different to anywhere else on the planet. South Africa can sometimes get a bit of a bad rep, but if you’re looking for somewhere inspiring to go you shouldn’t be put off visiting Cape Town.

I had the pleasure of staying in Dubrovnik some years ago. I was totally enchanted by the city. I don’t think Croatia gets the credit it deserves, it’s a gorgeous country that is steeped in history. If you want to experience culture to help release your inner creative, I’d recommend Dubrovnik.

There’s no place quite like Istanbul. So much history and vibrant culture converge. I got to visit Istanbul on a few occasions for work and leisure. Some areas of the city are understandably quite touristy, but it’s full of hidden gems that you won’t want to miss.

London is so unique because you have so many different cultures coming together in one place. The diversity is what makes the city great, and, as I’m from Britain, I’m incredibly proud of our capital and all it has to offer. It’s always buzzing with action and creativity, which is perfect for an actor!

Los Angeles

I’ve visited LA a lot over the course of my career, and it really is as good as people say it is. While I love London, LA definitely beats it on the weather front! It’s the home of Hollywood, so for an actor it’s always a dream come true to stay and work there. It’s a great place to get together with other actors, too.

Krakow, in my opinion, is Poland’s best city. There’s so much history to discover, and the creative scene is vibrant. I visited Krakow for several times and fell in love with the place and the people almost instantly.

This list wouldn’t be complete without Paris, would it? So much romance, Paris is a truly enchanting place. If you’re looking for somewhere to unwind and be creative, Paris is so inspiring. I’ve had the opportunity to take acting classes and workshops in the city – you’ll find artists everywhere you go, the creativity never stops!

For me, Prague is one of Europe’s best hidden gems. I think people often forget everything that the Czech Republic has to offer. You see it on your screen more than you think – it survived WW2 largely intact, so it’s landscapes and architecture feature in a lot of historical dramas. 90% of the epic new series by A+E Networks and History Channel ‘KNIGHTFALL’ was filmed in Prague at Barrandov studios which is located 30mins from city centre and also at various outstanding external locations within a 2hr radius of Prague. I had the pleasure of many trips to Prague over a six months filming period and I can honestly say this is a beautiful city that you must visit!
